My prints are faded
- If the print quality is poor, remove the toner cartridge from the printer and gently rock the cartridge from side to side.
- This movement helps distribute the toner evenly within the cartridge.
- After rocking the cartridge 5–6 times, re-insert the cartridge into the printer and print a test page.
- If the issue persists, check the life of the maintenance items in your machine in case any of them need to be replaced.
Note: Before replacing any maintenance items
- Power off the printer.
- Wait 30 seconds, then disconnect the power cord.
- Allow 15 minutes for the printer to cool completely before proceeding.
What items are included in the Compatible HP CE979A Image Transfer Kit?
The CE979A-REM contains the following:
- 1 x transfer belt assembly
- 1 x secondary transfer roller
- 1 x Tray 2 separation roller
- 1 x Tray 2 pickup roller assembly
- 8 x Tray 3, 4, 5 and 6 feed rollers
- 4 x Tray 3, 4, 5 and 6 pickup rollers

How do I replace my transfer belt (intermediate transfer belt (ITB))?
If the intermediate transfer belt (ITB) assembly is replaced, it is recommended that the secondary transfer roller is also replaced and the control panel is reset.
Transfer belt
- 1. Open the right-door assembly.
- 2. Use both hands to grasp the blue levers, apply slight downward pressure, and pull the transfer belt towards you at a downward angle.
- 3. Pull the transfer belt out of the printer until two large handles extend along the right and left sides of the transfer belt.
- 4. Grasp the large handles on the transfer belt, pull it straight out of the printer until it stops, and then pull up to remove it from the printer.
- 5. Remove all packing and protective covers from the new transfer belt and install it by following the steps above in reverse.
- 6. Once complete, close the right-door assembly.
Transfer roller
CAUTION: Do not touch the spongy roller surface unless you are replacing the roller. Skin oils on the roller can cause image quality problems.

1. Grasp one of the blue round features on either end of the transfer
roller, and then lift the transfer roller out of the printer.
- 2. Place the new roller assembly in position with the roller gear on the right-hand side, and then press down to ensure that the roller shaft snaps securely into the roller clasps.
Reset the New Transfer Kit setting at the control panel
- Use this procedure to reset the internal page count if a replacement ITB and secondary transfer roller are installed.
- 1. At the control panel, press the Home button.

2. Open the following menus:
- Administration
- Manage Supplies
- Reset Supplies
- New Transfer Kit
- 3. Use the Down arrow button to highlight Yes, and then press OK to select it.
How do I replace the secondary transfer roller?
CAUTION: Do not touch the spongy roller surface unless you are replacing the roller. Skin oils on the roller can cause image quality problems.
- 1. Open the right-door assembly.
- 2. Grasp one of the blue round features on either end of the transfer roller, and then lift the transfer roller out of the printer.
- 3. Place the new roller assembly in position with the roller gear on the right-hand side, and then press down to ensure that the roller shaft snaps securely into the roller clasps.
How do I replace the separation roller assembly (Tray 2)?
CAUTION: Do not touch the spongy roller surface unless you are replacing the roller. Skin oils on the roller can cause paper pickup problems.
- 1. Remove Tray 2 from the printer.
- 2. Open the right-door assembly.
- 3. On the separation roller assembly, slide the lever towards the unlocked icon until it clicks into the unlocked position.
- 4. Pull the separation roller assembly up and remove it from the printer.
- 5. Install the separation roller assembly, making sure that it snaps into the locked position.
- 6. Close the right-door assembly and reinstall Tray 2.
How do I replace the Tray 2 pickup roller?
CAUTION: Do not touch the spongy roller surface unless you are replacing the roller. Skin oils on the roller can cause paper pickup problems.
- 1. Open Tray 2.
- 2. Open the right-door assembly.
- 3. Remove the separation roller assembly.
- 4. Lift one of the two levers on either side of the pickup roller, and then push the right side of the roller in the direction of the arrow.
- 5. Remove the pickup roller.
- 6. Install the new pickup roller by inserting the left side of the roller first, followed by the right. It should click into place.
- 7. Reinstall the separation roller assembly, then close the right-door assembly and Tray 2.
How do I replace the pickup and feed rollers for Trays 3, 4, 5 and 6?
CAUTION: Do not touch the spongy roller surface unless you are replacing the roller. Skin oils on the roller can cause paper pickup problems.
- 1. Remove the cassette for Tray 3, 4, 5 or 6 from the printer, and then locate the rollers on the right-hand side of the tray cavity.
- 2. Release the three tabs, and then pull the rollers in the direction of the arrow.
- 3. Assemble the new items: 1 x pickup roller and 2 x feed rollers, and insert them into the slot on the right-hand side.
- 4. Reinstall the cassette for Tray 3, 4, 5 or 6 into the printer.
