Unfortunately, this is the downside to using refilled or compatible cartridges in your Canon inkjet printer.
This error is caused by the chip on the cartridge, still reporting the level from its previous use. Some cartridge chips cannot be reset which means when installed it will still show as empty or low ink.
Replacing the cartridge is not necessary, this fix will work with nearly any compatible Canon cartridges including:
How to stop your Canon printer reporting low ink
To disable the status monitor in your Canon printer, press and hold the stop button on the printer for 5-10 seconds. This will stop any updates on ink levels and will allow you to print without any further interruptions. It is normal for a red cross to appear in the status monitor above the cartridge after this troubleshooting. This shows that the monitor has been disabled for that colour.
You can ignore any warnings about "Print Quality". These warnings are triggered automatically when you install a compatible, "used" cartridge. The cartridges will work as normal, until they run out of ink. This process does not affect the page yield of the cartridge.
